On Thursday 30th November Maiden Erlegh Subbuteo Club will hold its inaugural Club night at Winnersh Allnatt Pavilion in Berkshire.
In the circle of life, this completes a circle for me with a return to what was then the home of Winnersh Rangers Football Club of which I was a founder member many decades ago! Back then it was Saturday morning football & running the Allnatt Pavilion as a café and committee meetings at the Allnatt Pavilion, now it will be Subbuteo table football as the venue for the first Maiden Erlegh Subbuteo Club night.
Why Subbuteo? I like many played the game on the living room floor as a lad on that wrinkled piece of green baize with wobbly players and a ball that was as tall as a player in those days, goals with square posts and someone always ended up standing on a player somehow! In the subsequent years of coaching and managing kids' football, playing FIFA and Championship / Football Manager I wandered down YouTube and Facebook tunnel, and who knew Subbuteo was back and still around!
Very different though, as it is now about flat-based players, [although wobbly players are still around!], polishing bases, games shown on YouTube and even a World Cup to be held in Turnbridge Wells next year, added to that just those who collect and buy and sell old and new teams and equipment and I was hooked once again! I found myself back at the Subbuteo table playing solo games and taking part in the social media-based International Solo Subbuteo League [ISSL] and subsequently seeking out a Club that met on a regular basis to play competitive games, with nothing in the immediate area close to home I was soon traveling to Andover to play games once a month at the great Andover Subbuteo Club run by Subbuteo enthusiast and player Chris Burford.
So the journey for me continues as on Thursday 30th November, Maiden Erlegh Subbuteo Club will hold its first Club night at the Allnatt Pavilion in Winnersh.
Bring it home England!
